    Default Height Map - yay!

I have been following Arsheesh's Eriond tutorial to get a good height map, and finally managed to get rivers to work on Wilbur. I didn't follow the steps to the letter because I prefer to work in Paint.Net as much as possible, even though it isn't as versatile, since my computer freezes up too much with GIMP. But I did need GIMP for the airbrushing part.

I still need to fix some of the rivers since I Wilburfied the map in quarters to preserve detail without having Wilbur crash on me. If you look really closely at the map you can see rivers that start small, begin to grow, and then stop abruptly in the middle of a landmass when they reach the halfway point on the map.

But overall I'm really pleased with how it turned out!

Here it is converted into 8 (or 9?) shades of grey in preparation for working with climates. I see a lot of work in my future...

Looking good. Dang, I need to figure out how to use Wilbur one of these days...

Oh, just FYI, Earth's land/water ratio is more like 70/30, not 50/50.

Thanks for the added bit of precision! I've been using a rounded ratio of land:water 1:2 because it's simpler for me to look at selected areas and see that the land selection is half the size of the sea selection, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to err on the side of slightly less land.

Yep! That's close enough to 30:70 for my quick calculations, I think. Nossin doesn't have to be exactly like Earth, though I do want it to have a similar climate, so there are definitely a lot of similarities.

Diamond misread your description as meaning it was half land and half sea rather than correctly as a ratio of one part land to two parts sea, hence his contrast to a 50/50 split. It's easy to do.* I had to read twice to see you were indeed talking about the land:water ratio. It may be clearer to use 1:2, rather than 1/2, as it is more immediately interpreted as a ratio, whereas fractional notation has other uses.

    * - I had to read the post twice to see that I did not need to make the same erroneous "correction" as Diamond did.

Aha! *hangs head in shame* Yeah, I meant percentage.
