I had assumed skypunk and steampunk were essentially the same thing! So Skypunk specifically has to be crystal-powered Atlantian / Castle in the Sky kind of tech?

I kinda read skypunk as being more magical than mechanical, but that's just my interpretation.

In reading through the genres again, there is a bit of grey area to work with and makes me think that if I get a chance to participate (have some surgery scheduled next week, nothing super serious, but it might have me down for a week or more) I might end up picking a primary and secondary genre like gaslight and steampunk and see if I can work the spin results in a way the links the two together sensibly.

I have a feeling Skypunk is like Sci-Fantasy. If I imagine it, it is anything from pure fantasy sky ports, to steampunkish air ports.

A quick search on "skypunk" gets us an informal description: "Worlds full of floating fortresses, sky battles in agile, obscure fighter planes, or common people shlepping about on islands in the sky." It also gets us the Wikipedia article "Ska Punk", which is quite different and not just somebody saying it with a Southern drawl. Although it does seem that punk music is much more clearly defined than the various "*punk" fiction genres like plumberpunk (which seems to involve little guys with '70s style pornstaches jumping into pipes along with lots of killing and theft).

I'm a little confused on this one - is this mapping specifically a structure/building/etc?

If we can combine genres, that does leave me feeling more interested in this! Like steampunk+skypunk or steampunk+gaslight or steampunk+lovecraftian are all interesting different flavors of steampunk, but what if we do that to something like... cyberpunk+lovecraftian (Alien?)

I rolled the wheel but I haven't picked a genre yet (I know the challenge said to pick a genre first but I've never been all TOO hyped for genre walls) and the things I rolled are interesting, I just don't think I'll be here for a solid chunk of August to work on it.

If you take another look at the original first post, you'll notice this line:
"A lot of these are structures which I appreciate is not everyone's cup of tea when mapping - if you want to include the structure/settlement as a point on a larger scale map try and think about how the nature of it would influence the wider area you are depicting."

I'd imagine combining genres is fine, given you are allowed to just pick whichever genre speaks to you. Go for it!

I smelled the glove and will follow your advice

Just for no reason I'm going to use a choob d6 to select two pouches to throw d6s from to select a genre.
