I've been working on just this idea for about 10-years, but I'm a bit too meticulous and slow-working for it to have come to fruition yet.

So far I've made 17 maps with 1,000,000+ words of encyclopaedia entries for the world. If you're interested you can check out my blog and deviantart

This seems like a close-enough-fit to what I've been planning!

I sent you a PM, Calypso. I've sometimes thought that a compilation book of some of the great works here at the Guild would be very successful, and it seems I'm not the only one who had that idea. All it takes, though, is one person to actually put it into action. Well done, good luck, and count me in. It would be a privilege to contribute.

We have talked about this sort of thing many times. I always thought it would have been good to have an annual calendar of the best / or good maps where you could buy one in the months running up to the new year and then once you have used it you then have 12 printed maps to put down on the RPG table or use as gaming material.

An atlas also seems cool but it sounds like it needs to be all part of the same world. In some respects that was what the community guild mapping projects are all about. But with those it would be difficult to get all of the contributors on board all at once and in any case with the old Ansium world it was CC licensed.

I like the idea but I have had pushback whenever I have proposed such a concept. If you can get enough contributors on board then depending on the details it sounds like it could be a worth while undertaking.

I think this is going to be one of the key sticking points on how this project pans out. I interpreted the original proposal as a compilation book of great maps/artworks, wherein the individual maps are not necessarily connected. There are many similar art compilation books out there, this would just be a map-focussed one.

Calypso, could you please clarify your thoughts on this?

Yeah I was just thinking what THW said. I think the plan was to create a book about fantasy/fictional cartography filled with articles, interviews, art and artist. The word Atlas was probably used as a sort of thematic title.

    Hello,

thank you all for the great feedback and good ideas.

The project will be an artbook based on cartography. The artwork (maps) will be in sections where artist will be presented; not just with their art; but also with a short story about them; how they got into cartography; their commentaries etc. There is also a plan to have a small tutorial section; digital and traditional cartography, etc. There will be variouos sections of content all, of course, revolving around cartography, viewing it from different angles.

Next week I will write a concept about the project and terms in rough for the artist, to give you clear view how it will all look and to give you the insight. Ideas and conversation are of course welcome! I will ask for your emails in PM so we can talk more and agree on the matter.

I will be back on tuesday from business trip and I hope on wednesday/ thursday will send you concept that I stated above.

    Cheers!

Nice, this might be a great book to learn new things, not only a selection of maps.

This is a great idea! I would love to partecipate in this project.
Unfortunately most of my maps have been commissioned by clients that also bought all the rights to print and sell them. So I do not have the permission to print them.
There's also another problem to consider: the copyright. For example I don't think that it is legal to sell and print a map that is a representation of the world of Harry Potter. It must be an original creation to avoid any legal issue. Maybe I'm wrong but I just wanted to share my doubts with you
