    Latest version.

I changed the looks of the water and renamed some cities and/or moved them a bit.

This is looking really nice! How did you get that water effect?

Very simple "plastic wrap" filter onto the water layer. I tried around a lot, it didn't look good at first. The water has to have enough details to not look like plastic.

So there's several textures creating the water. Steps for the water effect:

    - alien structure, very big chunks of stuff (FilterForge can do such stuff)
    - more or less random cloud texture (like the 'cloud' filter' in Photoshop that generates random cloud fields)
    - REAL sky cloud layer merged in
    - and lastly an artistic filter ontop (PS Filter Gallery: Underpainting)... that's all the vertical lines you can see when you right/click open the map to see it full size.
    - to make the coast look a bit better I used 'inner glow' on the water
    - flattened all the water layers to one, so that the inner glow is part of the actual texture

That last step made the "plastic wrap" create the small white lines around the coast. That was a happy accident here, that happened here.

I really like my map now and it's usable for actual gameplay. :-)

Adding all the different textures to the water layer also created something like "underwater structures".

    The steps in PS layers:

    See both here:

I really like the water texturing! Thanks for the response. I'm going to fiddle with my map and get something like that. Well done!

    * I tried to make the water look less elevated. It's also lighter now.
    * The south is no pole region anymore but an array of volcanoes, to suggest that the map is only a part of the planet.

    * More elevations
    * Changed the brown / snow covered mountains
    * More depth to the water

It's really fascinating how you got from "zero" to such a special first map, with intelligent use of filters and technique. Cool!
I think I've never seen the plastic wrap filter used for anything useful before.

I agree, I couldn't keep up with so much texture. It looks sooo dense!
