Is it just me, or do the ocean currents follow the wind currents a lot except shifting more toward the equator?

Oh wow... that's neat. It makes me think back to early ocean pioneers and how the winds would have influenced their travel route. Considering the importance of migration, discovery, and trade I can't help but ponder how our world would be different if the wind patterns had been shifted around. Colonies may have risen up in different areas, cultures may not have interacted, or those who had may not have. Whole cultures may have died off and others may have flourished.
