What I've noticed is that it tends to be somewhat frowned upon to vote for yourself on the Cartographers' Guild. There's no rule against it, though, and I think the Lite Challenge tends to be more forgiving than the monthly challenge.

Everybody has different ideas of what is 'good form', though (good form: how's that for Englishness?): personally, I don't vote for myself, but I have no hesitation voting for an unfinished map (very nice work Amarants and Poison; I look forward to seeing both of those completed and polished in the Finished Maps section one day ); as stated above, however, some people will absolutely never vote for something unfinished...

And good luck to everyone who entered this month: there's some great maps in this challenge

To be honest I wasn't even aware that this could be an issue or seen as bad form. Just as you normally do it if you put yourself or something you made or stand for up for a vote it just seems the natural thing to do to me to vote for your own "position" (or map), for the lack of a better word. Where I would draw the line is voting for yourself is done solely to push your own piece rather than your own vote being part of the votes you give. Hence my votes for GLS and Imants. I would never just vote for myself.

I always haver when I come across an unfinished map - undecided in a general sense. But if something is really good and more than 3/4 done from my perspective, then yes, I will vote for it even though its unlikely to win, simply because many voters will automatically rule it out. Its more of an 'encouragement vote' I'm giving when I do that - in the eager hope of geeing its creator up to continue, so that I can see the finished map one day. I don't think it does any harm if it doesn't disturb the pattern at the top end of the field.

I wouldn't vote for an unfinished map if doing so meant that it would displace a finished one, for instance

No one said it was wrong! And it certainly isn't breaking any rules. Maybe us 'English' people are just silly for being this way

Don't worry about it, Wired. I definitely can understand everything you said, and particularly agree on the last point.

Thanks for the vote, by the way.

There's indeed nothing to worry about. We all have our own criterias. You can cast how many votes you want (including voting for everyone or no one). The only rules that applies are against voting fraud (as stated here), and there's nothing much more to say.

Ahem, GLS and Mouse, it's clearly a British thing! I also feel the same way as you guys, but I ain't English!

There's no judgement from me on how anyone votes, or who they vote for. It's entirely personal. I have no problem in voting for an unfinished map so long as it looks fairly far along. And I don't always vote on any technical mapmaking aspects either. If I think it's pretty or imaginative, it gets my vote (I may be shallow!)

Ok - 'British' it is - or maybe its broader than that?

Maybe its not really a national or regional thing at all, but purely down to the way we are individually taught to behave and think
