Actually scale is not only relative size compared to reality. The motivations are variable - perspective, size, importance, taste but every trait that one puts on a paper is dictated by a scale decision. In a map I always look first at what has been done big and what has been done small because the scale is the surest hint of what the author considered important.
But clearly whatever an author is happy with goes.

There's probably as much ways to look at a map as there are people looking at it.

Thoughts so far? I'm not entirely sure what I want to do with the border, any suggestions?

I prefer the first version of the border. The lines in the second are not equal , black lines are longer.

Map borders do not need to be overly complicated in my opinion.

The texture on the second one is nice though.

I should have said that those bars where temporary as I'm trying to figure out how do scale bars.

Here's an update. Trying to keep my textures and effects modest compared to my last Ulthui map, but I'm not sure yet if I should stick with black and white/a golden brown map colour or like this with a faint blue for the sea and maybe a faint green for land.

Would still like to add in scale bars around the border but I can't get the right pattern.

Well, that's looking very good and the mountains are excellent. Are you planning to color it?

Thanks a lot! I'm not sure yet, actually. Maybe, but I like the way it looks right now, and I've yet to make a black and white map.

I think it looks great as it is, but I'd love to see a colour version too, just for contrast. I'm in awe of your mountains. Fantastic job!
