Thread: Fière-Muraille - City at the heart of Rostland

Fair criticism so far, the forest were done a lot earlier than a lot of other things, and probably could have been remade to have a fluffier edge and depth (simulate the ups and downs of individual trees, etc), they look like green flat plateaus. The font choice ... I can see it being a bad one, even though I really like this font for the legend (I wanted a hand-written look, which is perfect), for the labels on the map itself (the two woods and the two rivers), I have to agree and unfortunately I originally wasn't planning on putting any text on the map itself, but I felt like I had to for those specific landmarks. I could have put a looooot more labels/numbers and have a huge legend, but I had to cut it down so the map was readable.

Thanks for the good words, i'm pretty excited to work on my next map

Nicely done. The textures are very good, and I quite like the fields (although I agree with Max about the forests).

What is there to say but WOW!!!

I have not gotten into doing city maps yet, but I hope I can get to this level of quality someday.
It is one of the best city maps that I have ever seen.
This one should be on the sites front page.

There is so much here to like, I am not sure where to begin, but details like:
    1. The old ruined wall jump out to me right away.
    2. Using the border as the scale marker.
    3. The way the high ground is depicted.
    4. The castle itself is awesome!
    5. The Key at the bottom.
    6. Everything is beautifully done.

I don't see a single thing in this that I would change - perfection!

This should be the next Cartographers Choice Winner

(I hope the people that have commented has taken the time to rate your thread)

    I really love it!

The farmland looks so good, the cobblestones really jump out at you with a realistic, crispy feel to them; the buildings are great, and the overall colors work really well. I like that the tonality of the piece is not too dark and muddy, which sometimes happens with earthy-looking full color maps.

The only thing messing with my head is the treatment of the cliff faces. With the vertical detail lines extending UP from the lower, darker cliff-bottom line, the cliffs all look reversed to me. I assume we're looking at a city and castle on a hill, right? Not descending into a pit? I'm much more used to the vertical cliff detail lines extending mostly from the cliff-top DOWN, and I keep having to tell my eyes to look at it the other way. ( I mean, obviously the shadow work on the cliff sides does help a bit...just not enough for me, personally. )

    Thanks for the great map!

Yea that's something I tried to fix but couldn't get to a perfect state Xpian, which is why i'm trying a different style of cliffs for my next city map. The top-down perspective is tricky to keep when you're detailing cliffs and such, it bothers me too but I was too far in the project to change it. The next maps hopefully won't have that problem
