LOL! I think I'll be stubborn at that point and decide to stick to my current version, or I'll spend the rest of my life chasing around after various bits and pieces that don't come with the package.

The good news is they only release about every 4-6 years, and most of the changes are not super drastic and for the better to make things more intuative and/or faster. Unfortunatley, it's still going to be 2+ releases before we get layer effects, so learning how to achieve those things will be relevant for a long time.

I learn a lot faster by watching things...
Here is something I knocked up last night, after watching this video:

The truth is I got just a wee bit distracted. What I was really looking for was a way to create gold leaf decoration effects for my current world map. Does anyone know how to do this in GIMP?

Well.. your first go is fairly right on with the second part of the process I would think. Once you play with and get the texture the way you want, then the rest should be masking what you don't want. Start with various noise layers and then play with doing various bump map settings(mostly low depth and waterlevel). Once you get the texture you want, you drop in your color layer under it and set the bump map layer to overlay or soft light or perhaps hard light and possibly play with the opacity depending upon how "in your face" you want the effect.

LOL! I had to think a minute before I realised you were talking about the background?
I think I will have a go starting with the actual paper texture I use in the Errispa map. That's fairly bumpy anyway (if I increase the contrast), and it should make the resulting filigree look more like its sat on the paper than not.
