kacey...that's some pretty practical advise My new build will have a 3.4 GHz processor and 32 gigs of DDR4 and at least 6G of Nvidia....so, I would think that it should handle some descent size images in PS/Gimp...?

32 gigs of ram should be plenty, What processor are you putting in? I looked at the benQ monitors when I was searching for mine, and that's what my other half wants, but I'm very happy with the one I have, the BenQ monitors are really expensive, but I heard they are excellent.

I'm using a 27" monitor, nothing fancy (bought it on a sale monday on Amazon back in the day when I still worked there and got an extra 10% discount). The increased size just makes working on stuff a lot more pleasant.

I believe my buddy that's going to build it, talked me into a "AMD RYZEN 7 1700X 8-Core 3.4 GHz (3.8 GHz Turbo) Socket AM4 95W YD170XBCAEWOF Desktop Processor ". Honestly, as far as the "higher end?" monitors go...it seems that the BenQ's are fairly priced? (Comparing them on Amazon vs similar monitors of other makes)

That's the same processor that I'm getting so I guess we'll both find out soon enough if it's good for making maps. My fiancé sais it should be good for PhotoShop, zbrush, and keyshot but only time will tell.

oh .. those were the days... although ZX Spectrum was the one I started playing with

That said, today I use a Samsung 4k screen (3840x2160) and two similar 4k's a work. I really love that I'm able to see more map at once when I work instead of having to zoom in and out all the time.

Wow, that CPU is almost twice what my whole rig cost to build! Surely there's enough processing power there to render video, never mind stills, in 4K.

However I have heard the same thing that kacey says, that lower definition looks truly appalling on 4k screens.

I watch Netflix on my monitor now and then and it generally looks fine ... don't watch flow tv anymore though.
