I think the key isn't only about fills... It is a question of Harmony.
I'm hacking my way into the cartographical realm with AutoRealm, AutoCAD, GIMP, and Google Sketchup as my tools!
"Civilized men are more discourteous than savages
because they know they can be impolite without
having their skulls split, as a general thing."
Hmmm. The only problem with explanation is: I don't use GIMP, so I can't help you with exact details. But look at the tables(?) you drawn. With the wood texture they are aim for one style. With the blue lines you aim for another style.
Some new map that needs "photo quality printing" rich in textures, no contour lines. The other part shows some countour lines, and it is strong and harsh.
The two options don't mix well.
If you would have thick walls, give them a stone texture, do some bevel, some shadows, etc. you would have some other stone texture for background, you would show the items without strong contour lines, but would use fills and maybe some shading, etc. as well. you would get one kind of maps.
If it is only blue on a white sheet, and old school, you get some other kind of map.
But you shouldn't mix the two option.
I thought that's what you meant but I wasn't sure. Hopefully my last map was more harmonious.

Yes, but if you want to use textures, we could find some good way to make it possible with your tools But I can't help with GIMP now
Try following my random coast tutorial to get a random cave selection, or just draw with a jitter brush then convert it to a path and stroke the path with the same sized brush....
Here is an example on top of your map:

And during my lunch hour I added my cavern area to the tomb.
