Coloring is indeed more difficult than expected, at least for me. Well, I don't know Gimp very much, it's powerful but not very intuitive, imo. Personnally, I'm using Krita for almost everything but a few things (like labels) or certain kind of maps.

    Welcome!
You could also consider to leave it in black and white. It's a great map already.
    By the way, fascinating backstory.

Thank you Fabio p! Ilanthar, how easy is it to use Krita?

Opinions differ on that front MMM.

I find Krita charmingly cooperative in everything I want to do... (except perhaps when labelling, for which I move the map to an alternative app).

Its much more of a sketchy/drawing app than GIMP, and is about 10 times easier to use if you have a tablet than GIMP is. The dynamic interpretation is much, much better in Krita.

It doesn't handle files that are as big as the ones that you can create in GIMP, and you can't economise on space by trimming a layer to be only as big as the thing you are drawing on that layer (smaller layers = less MB = you can have more of them), but juxtaposed against those disadvantages and the disadvantages of the labelling problem are the very big advantages of having thousands more blend modes to apply (that's like the multiply and overlay modes I mentioned above), and a phenomenal (if complicated) brush engine, where you can practically make any kind of brush you so wish. If you can dream a brush, you can make it in Krita.

I would say that Krita is far more intuitive than the GIMP, but I have known others throw up their hands in exasperation with both these apps

The only thing to do is try it and see...

Krita is better if you have a tablet, with just a mouse I'd say GIMP is maybe the better option.

Krita keeps the layer size trimmed automatically to the max extent of the used pixels on that layer. ie if you make a stroke the layer only creates a box big enough to fit that stroke.

...And as with any app - you just keep learning new stuff about it every day

The best way to find out if Krita is for you, is just to play

Its a little difficult trying to imagine what kind of difficulties you are talking about without seeing the result.

Any chance of a 'messy' WIP?

(If you don't use the WIP tag it won't show in the album of entries)

Well. Here it is. Done something wrong? There's some areas of white near the coast, working on that. This will take ages. Wait... huh? How do i add it now??
