I haven't used Solidworks, so I cannot rightly say. But from the videos I just watched, Solidworks is for creating accurate 3D designs, for like 3D printing and real world construction. Blender3D can do that stuff, but is geared toward 3D art and animation. As Falconius says, if you are familiar with 3D software, the only learning curve will be the hotkeys and orientation of tools. If you start using Blender, I would strongly suggestion learning the hotkeys it will speed your work up exceedingly. I love Blender because it is free and handles better than the leading 3Ds Max, whose price is atrocious.

Last time I used solidworks was at technical school for mechanical 3D parts and drawings. Could not imagine that it could be done something like this I must admit that i am not much experienced with blender, but this two softwares are pretty much different. only what is the same is the 3D aspect. Its true that if you can work in one 3D software its easier to learn new one, but its not just about learning hotkeys in this example, because those two programs are each for totally different purpose.

Anyway really nice work done here.

It's also a full suite of things, from modeling, to animations, to texturing, to sculpting, to lighting and rendering, which all work together seamlessly*. The Autodesk stuff is really only for studios that are already stuck on it. And for sculpting you still really can't beat Z-Brush, but that is still somewhat affordable and not applicable to this situation.

So true!... That is why I love Blender. lol.
Z-Brush is quite capable and awesome from the videos and art I have seen.

    Lol. I think we're high-jacking MatteBlack's post.

LOL! No problem. I use Solidworks in my day job as it's intended for product design (and other things) plus it's used with engineering programs such as Pro/E-Creo.
Now I just need to get up to speed on Rhino.

Found some time to do a little more work on the city and also play around with textures and colors.
Nowhere near completed but was glad I was able to keep movin' on it.

I like it. The problem with 3D maps around this scale is actually conveying the sense of scale, typically if you use humans they are too small to notice or provide that understanding so I've relied on large vehicles like ships in the past. Or maybe I'd just really love to see ships in the map because I love ships.

Looking good. Are you going to add labels? No pressure, just asking.
