Such a splendid shading man. Top-shelf stuff !
I also cant decide which version is better. It depends on the rest of the colours and overall look. For now both works just fine.

I agree with Kell, that something in between is perfect! Gives the feeling of life without being too overbearing. Plus, it will blend with the other colors on your palette. This is going to be fantastic!

I think i know what it is now, for me at least...
The darker one is making it seem dimmer, like it's evening and the light is lower on the horizon.
Which, for me, makes it harder to see detail, but adds mood and atmosphere.
The lighter makes it seem more like full daylight and you can see things better.

    Thanks again everyone!
In fact, I think I'm doing it the wrong way (partly...). The colors/contrast will be a serious question after the topography is done, I guess. So, some more mountains.

Plus I'm thinking I'm quite far from what I had in mind at first... So maybe I'll go for something really different concerning the color scheme.

I think its looking great. The exaggerate mountains actually work well for me and the subtle shading works as well. With more color as the map progresses, I think it will be just splendid.

Damn Ilanthar, i think i mentioned it before, but i totally admire your attitude of challenging yourself with new styles and concepts every other day. Never standing still, always reaching out for the next mapping adventure! The landscape looks sooo fantastic ... i'm totally blown away... i mean, did i miss something or were you secretly training this painterly style besides your zillion other wonderful projects just to show it here like you've never done anything else?
Btw. if there's a tiny slice of your brain left after Diamond came by, i'd happily take it!

Incredible, the talent you have for, in a few brush strokes, giving relief, perspective, altitude. A rendering so lively and at the same time so artistic. If you ask me, don't ask yourself too many questions: what you've already achieved is really wonderful, the rest can only be just as beautiful!

    Well, thanks everyone!
I was not really happy with the look of it (and I feel my mountains are less and less convincing). But maybe, it's just me and the repetitive work..

I first thought should try do something more like (I actually lost quite some time doing some failing tests).
    NE test.jpg
But it's taking time and the result is not very to my liking yet as well...
So, I guess I'll stick with this one (and try to correct/improve what I dislike afterward).
