Thread: [Region 1][Map 12] Beastlands

I think I'm done now, (compass rose courtesy of profantasy), Torq, I can reword the place descriptions to suit the wiki, the descriptions are pretty rubbish anyway. I don't usually like frames, but RobA was right, the image was getting really dark, so I put a dark frame around it to make it lighter.

I got the spot illustrations from two excellent books I picked up this week from the Dover Bookshop (which specialises in selling royalty free art), the first is called '1565 Spot Illustrations and Motifs' (comes with a CD) and the other is called 'Heraldic Crests - A Pictorial Archive of 4,424 designs for Artists and Craftspeople' (no CD so you need a scanner). The Centaur is a frankenstein of two images (a horse and a man with a club).

I think the frame adds a touch of class to the map. A great work, to say the least.

I did notice something in your description, however. Right above your description of Barrow-Town, you've got a piece of a sentence that seems to be out of place: "cordial dealings with the Blue Mane herd."

Lol! Bugger! Well spotted! I'll amend it! (Hopefully it will be amended again once the Wiki editorial team have decided what this region is about).

    Cheers

Hi Ravs, Whats in Casteran ? Just thinking about whether I need to join up with it. I thought you mentioned it was boggy ground with monsters in that green patch so wondering whether anyone would have need to travel south from Pludery Point. I'm wondering what Torq has in mind for Olag Moyle too...

    'What's in Caestern?'

Whatever you and Torq like, I'm totally at your disposal as to what you want in the top right hand corner, names etc. Would you like a road going north? I kind of envisaged the boggy ground as being on the south and west coasts of the Lake Festus (basically my bits) the north and east could be better land.

    Hi Red and Ravs

I have the Groamen originally coming to Groam from the North and Nort West. The original routes have fallen into disuse and those places are not major centres anymore. Now they can be just about anything. Sounds like you have an idea Red.

Ravs - Could you please post the text in your VERY nice map in this thread so that I can copy-and-paste into the wiki?

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say this yet, and I don't know the plans for unveiling the wiki are, but entries are already starting to be created. Your text will be a great addition.

    Thanks.

Cheers Tim, here you go: Feel free to make any alterations you'd like to

    General Observations
Travel in the beastlands must be undertaken with preparation and care, for all approaches to the region require passage through lands occupied by the Centaur folk who do not take kindly to strangers. To the North dwell the White Hoof herd, known for their war like nature and desire for solitude, they are unfriendly and surely folk. The Red Hoof herd to the south, however, have reached an accomodation with the Dwarves of the Limbik mines and the smiths and metalworkers of Irontown, with whom freedom of movement is traded in return for items of worked metal. The Blue Mane herd to the East are larger than their cousins but are peaceable unless provoked.
    Irontown
The industrious folk of Irontown earn their keep by the imports of ore from the Limbek mines. The air is fuminous and dark in this place on account of its many smithies.
    The Orchards
History does not tell how the halflings came to settle in these parts, but they are friendly to centaurs and humans alike. They do not venture into Spider Claw Forest which is a dark and dangerous place. Fell creatures occasionally raid the halfling hamlets, often taking children who are never seen again.
    Farpoint
A small and squalid hamlet approached by the coast road and built upon stakes in the rancid marshes which follow the coast of Lake Festus from the Deeping Gully north to Jimbuck Bay. All that remains of the old wars with the Centaurs is Fort Lost, an isolated and desolate place. The monks of Absen dislike strangers although they will assist those in need.
    Barrow-Town
The barrow-folk are primitive people who bury their dead in underground chambers. Little else is known of them
    House of the Dead
Rumour tells of a dread hall in the Dark Marshes where sacrifices are made to nameless gods, but whether these are true, none can tell.
