I'm attempting to add a scale to my map which I've never done before, so I just want to make sure I'm getting this right. When you look at scales, am I right in saying that you draw imaginary lines down from the markers and that is how much distance is depicted as opposed to the numbers on the scale show the width of the whole map?

Numbers are definitely not my strong point so this is a bit difficult. My map is about the width of Portugal (I guess). I think I want the map to be a total of about 60 miles across, how should I depict that? I suspect, and differing from my example image, to use smaller numbers.

But do I first need to work out how it would fit along the width of the map?

Rivers are a bit different on this jpeg but I'm going to change them for the final version anyway so haven't bothered to make them darker in this WIP. Hall of the Blind King is very much subject to change. I don't hate it, but it's my attempt at drawing a building from scratch.
