They are the most important cities of the Argomanic Empire, which is the most powerful state on the continent of Belendora - the fictitious map maker resides there, so he has put some home-flavour to the map.

National borders, labels and first idea for city icons placed.

Looks great! Though the cities icons color don't really make them legible on the map. It's consistent with the borders but I'd try some different colors to see if some lighter one works

Good point. I try to make them brighter.

I agree with Max; that red is too dark. I'm not sure I'm a big fan of that type of border on this map either. I know that's kind of your 'thing', but what about trying just plain dashed or dotted borders? I feel like the way they are now, they're too much of a distraction/overwhelming with the shields and overall land colors.

I have put so much work into the border - I'll keep it, even if I can see the point. My goal was a heavily decorated map and I think the current border serves this goal well.

I have slightly changed the appearance of the icons.

I like the map but everytime I look at it, I think there's something wrong with those icons....Don't really know what but since there's a lot of them, it's kind of disturbing. Maybe the lack of colors on them that make them look too unform on the map? :/

Good point. I'm not 100% satisfied with the icons as they are now and this could be the reason.

They seem far too evenly spaced to me... I think even in a heavily-settled region, there's still going to be 'dead spaces' where there's not a lot (or any human habitation). Certainly they exist on your map, but the way the city/town icons are spaced makes it seem as if there isn't any.
