I really like the deep colour palette. I wouldn't say the castle is that big, I think it looks well balanced with the rest of the composition. If it's on a hill it could be very important without having a big town around it.

Your map has come together nicely. On one hand, the castle seems large for the village, but look at the Scottish castles that sit out in the middle of nowhere all by themselves. Perhaps there is a large community just 5 miles away and some reclusive noble had this castle built so he could be by himself. But, over time a small village grew up around it. Totally plausible.

Whump, thanks! Good point about the castle.

Bogie, well see, I'm Scottish so obviously I've subconsciously went with what I know. Round these parts, you can barely go round the corner without running into a castle.

But seriously, my idea was that there was a castle built in the past to guard the mountain pass from enemies from the South. There hadn't been any for a while, so the castle was used as a home for the ruling family, rather than as a purely defensive structure, though there's change afoot....!

So... yeah, I really want to see that. I want to try drawing that too. It sounds like a lot of fun. So I'm secretly hoping that the next monthly challenge doesn't capture your interest ... or that you can do the Over-The-Top Town as your entry!

Also, I submit to the other perspectives on the castle. It's totally not a deal-breaker for me.

    cheers,

Unless there is both a village smithy and a castle smithy, the smithy is unlikely to be outside the castle's defensive walls. After all, if you are under siege, you will need to have your weapons and armor kept repaired. For that matter, even a quick raid by an enemy would be highly effective in damaging your defensive readiness if it took out an unprotected smithy.

It is also rather odd that with water so available, the castle has no moat.

There's no moat for the very mundane reason that I didn't have time. I did consider it earlier on, and then again when I was working on the castle, but I knew I wouldn't be able to spare the time. In this instance, tragically, real world needs triumph over fantasy mapping.

I have to admit, i had the same in mind as Bogie when reading this XD Btw. i also think your castle has an intersting shape and fits very well with the other houses. The overall progress of your map is just great! And i really like the new crops in the south

Thanks, Abu. I'm a lot happier with the non-keyboard shaped crops.
