Oh it's also duck tape. And gaffer tape. All of those names are valid. It was originally 'duck' because it was waterproof and was used by the military for sealing up ammunition crates to make the seals watertight. Then it became a household product but it was coloured silver/grey and it worked really well for sealing up duct pipes. Gaffer tape is the black version used in theatre, presumably named after the backstage manager, or gaffer. It's used for cables and lighting filters, or for fastening young cast members to the scenery after the final curtain call

Anyway I've nicked another Mouse texture, rotated it, cropped it and applied it as fields.

LOL! What images you manage to conjure!

    As to the map...

Can I recommend that when using textures to 'paint' areas of a map, it can often look better if the edges are not so sharp?

Other than that - again coming on nicely

That's why I was thinking of a boundary layer to fuzzy them up a bit

Make it kind of.... fluffy, and... voomfy

You can smear the edges on a mask using the smear tool. The beauty of smearing the mask is that you don't smear the pattern.

I didn't smear but I've gone round the edges with a fuzzy brush on the mask and got this:

That makes it look more like vegetation

If you have time tomorrow, the one thing I would comment on now is that the road texture is maybe a bit too splotchy and contrasty. How about duplicating that layer, hiding the original, and trying a more even texture? One that is only just a texture, and more of a neutral colour than anything else.

I was thinking about redoing the road as I did it a bit backwards. It was the first thing I did when I started in GIMP. I've got most of the rest of today to work on it.

I'm trying out the labels for size. I'll tidy them up later when I have the font size correct and the finishing touches have been made.

I do believe I am in a position to say I'm finished, although there may be one or two tweaks later on...
