for georeferencing here is a basic guide for Qgis
-- under the GPL license and should be in about every linux repo

    http://www.qgistutorials.com/en/docs...ng_basics.html

    for your map
the 4 points for the lines of center latitude and longitude should do

Wow! What a lot of useful and extremely interesting information from Abu and John! I hope you are managing to take it all in, Straf

    How is the map going?

There's a lot to take in isn't there? The map is going slowly and I haven't been spending much time on it for a couple of days. I'm chomping at the bit to get out for a walk, I'm just trying to work out if those dark clouds up there are just hanging about or if they're waiting for me to get to the furthest point from shelter on my walk before deciding to soak me.

The Dorset downs are more alive in the rain. All the colours are more vivid than when they are being bleached out by an overload of sunshine - not that I'm suggesting you should go out and get wet and cold I get far more inspiration from a rumble of purple thunderheads and patches of iridescent green where the sun is peeking through, than I ever have from a landscape that is all bleached out and far too bright for me.

If its any help, its not raining here at the moment. In fact its quite fine (apart from a blustery wind). If the weather's doing its usual thing and heading east then you might be all right. If its blowing west, though - thanks for the bad weather warning! LOL!

I was going to say there's one thing you're unaware of - that I'm a wuss when it comes to cold and wet. But above all I hate the wind. In the winter my temples freeze off and in the summer I always get dust in my eye. It's supposed to be nicer tomorrow so I might go for a longer walk then instead.

Which means I have time to work on my map or my writing.

Are you on the turkey yet? Happy Thanksgiving My favourite Turkey is the Wild variety in a bottle

I could do with a bit of that right now, I've been shading away like a mad one and haven't even finished the top bits yet.

Abu thanks for the info sheet and links on mountains. It gives me even more stuff to think about.

John I installed GRASS and QGIS and have been having a bit of fun with them. I have managed to distort my maps into comedic shapes. I'll have a bit more play.

Mouse and kacey you have been here coaching me more or less from the start. Thank you

I really didn't meant to fllood you with too much stuff that is a bit hard to digest at once, and make you hate mountains even more, as i read on the other thread. I know it can be quite counterproductive in such a working stage, sorry! I actually wanted to give you some more practical hints focussed on the shading and linework you've done so far, but i'm unsure if it is even needed.
I admire your dedication working on all that with a mouse. I worked only for some months with a mouse in gimp and felt i was getting more and more comfortable with it. Now, after working for over a year with a tablet, i tried out drawing some mountains with the mouse again and have to say it's really challenging! Once again i feel deep respect for all the people doing such magnificent work with it...

for drawing maps , i do not do that
back in 89 i broke my neck and lost a bit of dexterity in my right hand
-- NO disability but my iffy / ok drawing became royally CRAPPY

so if i can do it typing all the better

like the user icon i use on the left there

a rendering of a comet passing mars
and the mars map is the one i created from the older MGS ( superseded now by MRO )
