Wip Map Project | City of New Richmond | Top-Down | Mixed Media | WIP

Map Project | City of New Richmond | Top-Down | Mixed Media | WIP

    Hello Cartographers!

For my first Map Project, I decided to post up my most recent creation - the City of New Richmond.

This is a "top down" or birds eye view, and the media I used is a thicker type of paper and various marker brands.

I have actually been creating maps since this late 90's. Though recently, I have started to explore other types of maps and actually finishing the projects.

The process of creating the maps is simple - page by page. Each page of the maps is 10.5 x 8 inches, and fit together like a giant puzzle.

    Background

The location of New Richmond is in the Pacific Northwest, in the lower mainland of British Columbia, Canada. The set date of the maps is unavailable, because i have not considered setting a date for it yet.

Last but not least, a short video of the most recent update

I'm going to be updated this as the updates roll in cause this city has lots more room to grow!

    Welcome to the Guild, Darcy.
A really nice clean map you have there.
I'm a fan of city planning and layout so I enjoy maps like these.
What is the purpose for this map? A story project? Or just for pleasure?

    Thanks J.Edward,

The main purpose of the maps originally was to be my way of playing a game of Simcity. However, the maps evolved to be more than just that. City planning has caught my interest, and this is the closest thing to that. Perhaps one day I'll go to school for it! In the meantime, I am doing the maps just for pleasure, however, there is potential to create a story around it, albeit, i would probably collaborate with someone for the story side. Here are some close up shots of the individual pages.

    Welcome to the Guild, Darcy!
I like very much your city project, especially because you're hand-drawing it.
It is an inspiring map for me, in fact I've started a similar map (not posted here yet) but I haven't enough time to devote to my project, currently.
Are you going to give names to the features (i.e. roads, buildings, ...) in your map?

    Map New Richmond | Update 5 | Feb-21-2016

    New Richmond | Update 5 | Feb-21-2016

A new day and a new update: Here is the most recent addition to the New Richmond map, animated:

New updated overview of the map. The lower left corner:

    @AzurePlanet

Happy I could offer some inspiration! As for your question, the only labels I have on my maps are on a few important buildings. Buildings with numbers in them signify how many floors it has, [ P ] is car parking buildings and "E" is for Housing Estates / Villas. To name each road and other features will probably be done in Photoshop if and when I dicide to do it.

I'm thinking I'll need to create a detailed description of what each building type stands for.

Map City of New Richmond | Update 6 | City Core Completed!

City of New Richmond | Update 6 | City Core Completed!

Yesterday while completing one of the final sections to the downtown core, I decided to take a photo shoot of the progress.

Below is the completed city core of New Richmond, which is shown as the darker area close to the waterfront. The red areas of the city core is parking lots that unfortunately don't show up well in the photo. This section of the map was particularly challenging to complete, as four pages needed to be worked on at the same time. However I made it! What remains now is just three pages in the original "seed" or phase 1 section (first 9 pages).

Going forward, updates will most likely be every 2-3 pages, depending on how big the phase I am working on at that time. The second phase is in the planning stages, which is shown at the very top. Phase II will add an additional 6 pages to the map, for a total of 15 pages once completed.

Map City of New Richmond | Update 7 | Beyond The City Core

City of New Richmond | Update 7 | Beyond The City Core

In the previous update of New Richmond, I was supposed to upload the scans of the city core. Today I did, and the results turned out better than expected. With the main part of the city now complete, I can now move on to the other portions of the city, and complete the final three pages of the "seed" or original nine pages that started this city.

Beyond the 9 pages, "Phase II" will add an additional 6 pages to the map (3 on top and bottom). There is a second creek that is up at the top section, but is not visible in the seed pages. The next part, "Phase III" will add even more pages, but I have still yet to figure out what is going on there. The other part I am not sure is what the final page count for the city will be. The 30-50 range seems okay, depending on how the city is going overall.

    Overall map zoomed out.

Close up the now completed downtown core.

North section of the core, with a large commercial complex on the left portion.

Zoom in on an area predominately filled with parking lots.

The last three pages to be filled, parcels already planned out.

    One more thing...

These maps, although hand drawn, could be making a transition into the 3D realm. For now, I am just experimenting with Sketchup 2016 to see how it all works, there is great potential here. Here is a taste of what could be coming soon.

    This is mindblowing!

I have serious map envy, Darcy.

You are incredibly talented. Keep going with this. I can't wait to see the finished product. I love the way you're using tradition media with the computer.

    Thanks PMravells!

I decided to place additional pics of the SKP work in the gallery section of the forums. The actual 3D work was a little bit tricky as its been a while since I created anything in Sketchup.

So far the results are okay, abiet some awkward dimensions when creating the parcels. The 16 x 16 meter grid sections really show the limitations of a grid layout can be. The maps however, were never supposed to be 100 accurate or to a certain scale, so the irregular and awkward dimensions are fine for now.

It did not take as long as expected to create the parcels, as I was able to utilize SKP's group and component functions efficiently.

The sketchup render is excellent! Very nice work so far.
