Default Making My First Map in GIMP

I have never used photoshop or GIMP before and I'm making the world map for my homebrew D&D setting. Let me know if I'm headed in the right direction. What mistakes am I making as a rookie digital cartographer? What can I do differently?

You've got a great start there. A few comments on your labeling:
    - You have a real mix of different type styles going on. I would stick to a smaller set of styles.
    - Some of your labels on things like Southgate and Eastgate are *extremely* small. Decide what size you intend your map to be viewed at, and then design your labels to be easily read at that size.

Yeah, that's one thing I'm having trouble nailing down. I guess I need to figure out how to prioritize things on a world map. Maybe Southgate and Eastgate would be better left out of the world view and included on a regional map for that area. Thank you very much!

Your rivers look pretty good, which is usually THE one thing newbies mess up, so kudos there.

I agree with Mapsburgh about the fonts. I guess my critique would be that the bevel you've got on the coastlines doesn't seem to go with the crisp look of the mountains. I would either ditch the bevel, or do something to soften up the appearance of the mountains.

Oh that’s something I didn’t even think about. I’ve basically just been watching a bunch of tutorials and trying everything. I’ll probably ditch the bevel cause I’ve grown quite fond of the mountains.
