A little more work. Finally drew a brush that I can at least tolerate. Needs a lot of improvement but think I know more the type of thing I'd need to do.

So, this was today's project. This is the first time I tried to do everything on a computer (in past have drawn by hand and a couple times done a little shading on a computer).
I used GIMP, trying to get the hang of some of the effects and drawing. I followed a couple tutorials on some elements. I have been having a bear of a time with trees. I was trying to create my own stencils/brushes, tried a couple methods, have not gotten something I'm happy with, but I'm trying to avoid hand-drawing each and every tree element. Anyway, looking for critique/suggestions. This is what my first attempt produced in the time I have had so far today. firstmap.jpg

In the time you've had "so far today"? That would take me a week!
The style is very good and so are the mountains.
I would lower the opacity on your tree layer to blend into the rest of the map. Overall, great map!

So, since this map project is what I'm doing to try to learn digital map making, I have re-done a lot of the map and tried out an entirely different tree method. This is the first time I've tried to do trees like this, and I also re-did the mountains for practice. Instead of relying on someone else's paper/parchment texturing, I tried to do my own texturing.
My next version will hopefully be black on a parchment style background, as I find the black and white more difficult due to the fact that I can't rely on the colors to indicate the type of landscape. It will have to be more drawing intensive as a black-and-parchment map.

Okay, here is the latest version, in which I try out differentiating between deciduous and coniferous forest, and where I go for a different color palette. I'm learning a lot from these attempts.
