This looks so good already! I like the aged look and color palette.
Righto, I've decided to go a bit more factual on this one.
Not sure where exactly, but here is a base map of the Caribbean thatI have thrown together over the last couple of evenings.

I second Aeshnidae : super promising, and those colors will work perfectly with the theme
Hope to see more soon !
Thanks both.
I have redone the costline as I realised that I had skipped out on one very important location - Tortuga!
Also, didn't like the grid or frame too much, so redid them. Oh, yes, and I toned down the yellow in the land colours a bit.

I like it so far! The woodcut effect looks really regular though; maybe some noise would help it match the aged look of the rest.

I definitely prefer the new frame and less-visible grid. I am partial to the blues in the first draft but your change of color will definitely make the map easier to read.
Sorry, going to mess everyone around again. I wasn't happy with the coast line and have again completely redone it from scratch to include more of South America, the Carolinas and Part of Virginia. I have also made the coast line more akin to what I would expect to see on a period map - i.e. not particularly accurate - with loads more islands than there actually are...
I wasn't really happy with the overall subject matter as it seemed a but vague, so have decided to focus on one particular pirate, Edward Teach, hence the need to expand the map. When I have decided on a title I will ask a CL to change it for me...

Thanks Gidde, I'm much happier with where it is going now.
Worked on the border - still need to stress it a bit more
I am having a bit of an issue with how to mark the timeline on the map - I feel I'm in danger of ending up with a map full of arrows. The first three are probably the most important, to get the reader to read the main info panels about Blackbeard's life in the correct order. I will happily accept any suggestions as to how I could deal with this. The rest, which will indicate individual ships taken/skirmishes/blockades etc are probably a bit easier to put in, but it's vital that the first four info panels are read in the correct order.
...and could a CL please change my title to "April 2019 Challenge: Blackbeard". Thank you in advance!

Changed! So far I don't think the arrows are bad. Your callouts are blending with land though. Maybe give them just a bit of a color to separate them from the landmasses?
