Thread: GIMP Script: hexGIMP

  1. #1

    Post GIMP Script: hexGIMP

This script creates a set of layers and an image grid suitable for making TSR-style wilderness hex maps with brushes derived from AKS Hex Mapper tiles.

Tiles are not included, but the distribution contains a Linux shell script which can convert AKS Hex Mapper tiles to GIMP brushes; you must obtain your own copy of AKS Hex Mapper*. The conversion script requires ImageMagick and GIMP.

Obviously this will be most useful to Linux users (AKS is Windows-only, and Windows users may as well just use that). The interface is simple: tiles are placed by selecting a terrain or city brush and clicking inside hexes; rivers, roads, and political borders are drawn by hand. An image grid makes tile placement easy, and multiple layers keep everything separated for ease of editing and to ensure correct appearance (for example, roads will automatically go under hex grid lines and over rivers).

Attached is hexGIMP 0.0.1 and a small example map I made with it in only a couple of minutes.

    Feedback is most welcome.

Version 0.0.2 is now available at the project's homepage: http://axiscity.hexamon.net/users/isomage/gimp/hexgimp/

The new version comes bundled with its own tileset -- brushes made from Thorfinn Tait's Atlas of Mystara hexes (used with permission) -- so the package comes ready-to-use. AKS tiles are no longer supported.

I'll stop posting updates here; those very few who may be interested can keep an eye on the project's webpage. Here's an image link which will always show the current version's example map:

OK, now I know I am casting a pretty high level resurrection spell on this thread and also I would like to apologize before hand for my ignorance but...I have reached a point in my campaign where there is going to be a serious movement of small and large armies around an area and I believe that a hex map would be an invaluable tool. So I would like to create one...

I want to use GIMP and the hexGIMP brushes and script. I have installed everything correctly and it works but...here is the big question: Is there a way to perfectly center a hex brush inside a hex from a grid or do I have to carefully place each hex brush? Seems it would take forever to do so. If I am missing something I am truly sorry for this almost silly question but a complete novice of GIMP asks for help...

    Thank you!

I believe it will set up a grid, so if you turn on snap-to-grid you will snap each hex to the right location.

Is there another place for updates or can isomage post the latest update on this thread? Thanks.

Also if there is another thread that this is on, that i failed to find, let me know.

no need for a 6 year old script for a 6 year out of date version of The gimp

the current Gimp 2.8.14 has a cool plugin with a second imaging processing tool
    G'mic

the current gmic gimp plugin has a hex maker built into it

Hello folks, sorry for the huge necropost. I stumbled upon this post because I was looking for a program that I could use to make custom hex maps. This would be used for a variety of things like Battletech, DND, Necromunda, etc...

It looks like hexGIMP plugin project is dead. Does anyone know if a plugin like this still exists?
