Just throwing this out there but I'm a Newbie here
Has anyone used Paint.net for map making?

I have. I've tried GIMP but for like 15 minutes and just went straight back (not necessarily because it was bad, I'm just a creature of habit). I also use Sketchbook Pro 7 in parallel to it, mainly due to the large amount of brushes, which can be added to Paint.NET with plug-ins, and it is very simple to make your own brushes for it, or converting Photoshop brushes, however I still prefer those by Sketchbook. Still, the effects and plug-ins for Paint.NET are rarely found in others, you can create amazing illustrations with it and the fine line you can make with it is amazing. The only major down side for it, and this is only if you use a pressure-sensitive tablet, is that it lacks the pressure sensitive options, no matter how hard you press that line wont change.

so no i do not use paint.net
by 2005 i was relay starting to disliking the MS dot net framework and c#

Actually, it's a very good graphics program and freeware too. It just doesn't seem to have caught on anywhere, certainly not here within the Cartographers Guild. But I wouldn't like being without it. I also use The GIMP ... another great freeware program. For me, The GIMP and paint.net supplement each other nicely. There are some things that The GIMP does faster and better and some things that paint.net does faster and better.
