Thread: Edits to my map

    Map Edits to my map

I am looking to get some edits done to a map that was generated that closely matches my vision for the D&D world I am creating. The generator only makes 1 continent and through the player stories there needs to be 2 also some desert areas. We only have a small area actually flushed out so far.

Here is the flushed out area and name

I will make a list of name of cities and their climates as well

Any help would be great even if it meant redoing the whole map. Also near Falcon Port there is castle and town that the players now own it is north west.

If designer thinks a new map would work better we can discuss paid project.

    Hi Legibryn,
as i was trying out some things in gimp today, i felt free and "remixed" your map a bit.
    - The first thing that came to my eye (besides some geographical aspects of the world, rivers, lakes, etc. ) is that the region your focus is on, seems a bit cramped to the right border. I just cut the map in two and flipped the pieces, so now the main landmass (or at least the most interesting looking part ) is in the middle of the map.
    - The rest was just making an outline of the landmass and make it "pop pout" a bit by stroking the coast, adding a parchment background and overlayed the original map for color.
    - Ofc this is where the "fun" (drawing the landscape, mountains, forests, swamps, city-icons, labels, etc. ) would only begin...

Just wanted to give you a quick example, how to make your map a little more appealing in a pretty short amount of time (actually, writing this post might have taken more time ...) Making a full blown map in this scale will take a lot more time ofc. Also, as mentioned before, i think the landmass/ rivers & lakes might need quite a bit of rework. This is really not my field of expertise, but i think there are a lot of inland lakes not connected to the sea. In many cases it could be solved by connecting them with rivers, or jusr "drying" them out.

Regarding the general shape of your map. I also tried out donjon's fractal world generator before, but i think it always looks a bit like strokes done with a huge brush Have you tried Morgensen's Planet Map Generator? For me it's the best web-based map generator i found so far.

Well, you wrote "any help would be great", so i hope this was at least a bit helpful.

    Cheers,
    AL

That coloring looks great. I will look at Morgensen's tonight and play with it. For the coloring did you apply a filter over it or something? Yeah the big thing due to the one DM is I need to separate the land into 2-3 continents. Yeah the focus was in a small area for now but another campaign is starting soon on the middle ish area in a desert city i am designing. I might just need to scrap the map and draw it out by hand and get someone to make that into a final product.

Glad you like it. As the base i used a parchment-like background layer and above it i just put your original map layer with layermode set to "Overlay" and ~50% opacity (that's why your original black symbols appear faded and brownish on it). For the water i just put two identical layers of the watermass in blue grey on top of it (one layer set to layermode "color", the other to "multiply". Each of them with ~50% opacity). Keep in mind that with this this technique the final colours always depend on the background layer, so a good textured background is key here. In fact you can also flip the whole thing and put the parchment (set to overlay, multiply, etc.) on top of the other layers. It's just the way i use to do it.
Maybe it's not necessary to scrap the whole thing, you could just carve out one or two more continents. I mean you already put some effort into it, laying down all the forests, mountains, hills and cities. Anyways, i'm looking forward what you'll come up with after trying out morgensen's

I can do something quick if http://www.cartographersguild.com/al...p?albumid=4578 shows a map similar to what you're after. All that I'd need is a quick sketch showing the general shape and layout of the continents as well as broad strokes for placing things like mountains and rivers (if you care).

    Something like this:
    sketch.gif

can be turned into something like this:
    final.jpg

    without too much effort.
