Wip July/August 2013 Lite Entry : Hol Dareun

    Hello!

I finally found the motivation/time to start another map, and I have always enjoyed the steampunk flavour (in moderation), so I thought this was perfect timing. This one will be all hand drawn, as I have never gotten into the graphic design software to make the beautiful CG maps I've been seeing around here. Hopefully this will do!

I am using a regular 100% cotton paper (for stationary and certificates and the like) and pencil for the rough outline. I go over that with india ink and finish the whole thing off with an amber shellac to give it an aged parchment feel. For now, it's just a blank canvas with some bordering sketched on. Actual map to come, I promise

Any feedback for better or worse is always appreciated. Thanks for looking!

That's gonna be pretty cool, I think.

    Thanks!

I just retuned from travelling and have reliable internet access again, so updates should be more frequent now. The border is now in ink and the rough shape of the land and city is done in pencil.
    Here's another-

    Here's some more progress--
City wall and the watch towers, a square in the lower half with the surrounding buildings, and areas marked of for palaces and the like (floating circles that will be connected eventually with the rest of the houses & shops).

Thanks! Here's the latest progress on the map. The entire lower city is divided before adding the individual buildings, making the streets. Also the canal that runs through the city is serving as a dilemma. I am not quite sure how to address this, as a three dimensional approach where you can see the tops of both side walls is in a different perspective than the rest of the map, but a purely bird's eye view would look weird to me, as well as a side view (which would be even worse with the perspective).

Real progress now, the entire lower city done. Also, I forgot to mention one of the earlier changes was the bordering of the shore to give it a less flat look.

Looks really nice! The up-and-over bridges are about the right amount of 3-d symbology.

That's all the lettering you're going to do? Seems a bit bare, text-wise. Or can you letter atop the shellac?
