A little Experimentation

This is just a quick map that i generated in Paint.net. i got the compass rose off of Google images and just generated a cloud image and posterized it, after that i copied the layer onto another layer, recolored it two shades of blue, and then blurred it. Lastly i recolored the land portions and put in that compass rose. So here it is.

I would say it's a good start - without knowing where you want to go with it, I can't offer much in way of advice or criticism. The only thing I can think of immediately is that the dark green of your land may make it hard to see detail of mountains, forests, etc when and if you add them.

I like what you've got so far. Your land shapes look really good and that's a nice effect you have in the water around the coastlines. Are you planning on adding rivers and mountains? That should probably be your next step.

I looks pretty good so far. I would personally use less saturated colours and as Diamond mentioned, lighter colours maybe.
