Default July 2016 Challenge: Somewhere in the Sea of Eusas

This seemed like a good challenge for me when I saw this entry:

I may have overdone it with the details, but the Schley catalog in CC3+ has some excellent frills for this sort of thing.

This is fabulous, really the work of an expert. Fantastic composition and stunning linework. The details packed into this is unbelievable, just amazing. A true piece of art.
My only critique would be the repeating pattern in the background, it just doesn't match with the expertise of the rest of the piece.

I agree, Mike Schley does good work. I should probably do a little work on that background.

Adjusted the scale of the ocean fill to get it a little less obviously repeating.

Don't you think it's a bit overcrowded ? Just a thought, no judgement.

Indeed, it is a little bit intimidating.

My original concept had been to try and capture the tranquil turquoise that the Sea of Eusas is so well known for, like so:
    Eusas2.gif

But the symbol catalog was there, calling to me seductively with its array of frills, reminding me that the Sea of Eusas is not always so calm. For a time, the waterspout had a ship caught in its embrace, adding a human element of drama. In the end, though, I felt that the natural elements of weather and serpent were sufficient to communicate the message: the "Meanwhile" is sufficient to represent the human hustle and bustle happening elsewhere, leaving this little corner of the world free from such cares.

Perhaps those elements might be too much, as you suggest. I do like Mike Schley's work, though...
