Thread: August 2019 challenge: Lands of the Greyvast

Wip August 2019 challenge: Lands of the Greyvast

I should probably have started this earlier, but I wasn't sure if I could finish in time.
And I already have too many orphan map threads, especially challenge ones.

I've thoroughly enjoyed the past two Random Gen challenges, so had to jump in.
My list was a good one and had some nice choices. I usually don't love the names, as I'm picky.
I tried to keep to these, but had to change some.

I decided to try to see if I could include all of the locations in one map.
I sort of did. sort of. They are all there, but not all fully show.
You'll see what I mean. I made a version with notes so you could see where each one is.

I decided that this would be part of one of my larger story worlds, or concept areas.
This one is another that relates to the incarnation of Time.
In an fun twist, one of my previous Random Gen challenge maps relates to Time as well, Iri-Oriand.

I really need to get busy with some more writing, at least outlining some of these locations and how they relate to each other.
I do have a lot of things in progress at the moment. It can be hard to find the time, ironically.

    Anyways, here's my list...

Obviously I started awhile back, not long after the challenge was announced.
So I'll show some progress shots up till my current state.

    Some early pencil sketches..

Then here's the final linework, plus the annotated version....

I am a bit further along than these color progress shots, but need to save another sample.
But, the weather is nice, so I might go hiking today. We'll see.

Ok, so that's it for now. I'll post a latest wip a bit later.

Or, well, I guess I can do that now.

Man, I should just throw in the towel now.

    As usual, already looks gorgeous.

And lo, out of the blue, Sir Inkman dropped another magnificent map. And all other challengers wept...

Great work John. I really like the way the landscape goes up to the horizon, and then you've got sky and clouds above.

    Thanks Greason
Never give up, never give in.
I go at the challenges as a way to force myself to try at least some new things.
Plus, the Random Gen is such a good mind teaser.

    Thanks George
I wouldn't suggest anyone should do that. ;P

I'm not sure if I am hitting my target though.
This was supposed to be more of a grey-green sort of scene.
I'll have to mess with it some more. Try to get more dreariness out of it.
I have some other things to try before doing the labels.

Oh, not giving up, just a little stuck at the moment. So very out of practice when it comes to "dungeon style" maps.

I need to do more dungeons too. I just don't get underground as often these days.
It sounds like the dungeon was going to be pretty large, from your description.

I got a load done today, as that was pretty much all I did, except a bit of yard maintenance.
I like how this one turned out, even though it is not quite what it was originally planned to be.
Part of the feel is there, and feels right. Part... not quite on the mark.
But, it is a map, not a landscape painting, afterall. So, no worries.

There's some back story business that may accompany the finished version of this.
I might do some other notes and sketches for over on the blog, after the contest.
Maybe something special for the patrons... not sure what, just now. Maybe a big basilisk.

Wonderful map John, I love the little picture windows showing city details.

Absolutely stunning. As always, but also... a little more, maybe. Something in the color. Something in all the lines. Something in the scale or the perspective. Anyway... something appealing to me.
'would like to know what's beyond...

Well, it seems I don't need to rush my entry any further since this here is certainly going to win. Very fine job there, J.Edward.
