Good choice of map for a do-over. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
Well, I certainly have a few old maps I could redo, but I feel I need one that is complete, has enough detail to be interesting, and is not too ambitious to try redoing in a month. That narrowed things down quite a bit and I settled on this large island (or small continent, perhaps):

The original was pencil on paper, but the redo is being done in GIMP.

Definitely some good bones to work with!

Adfor is absolutely right. That is a solid foundation to work from, so I am expecting great things from this one.

Cool original map for a redo - I'm curious for the final result.
What is the reasoning for placing labels first?
Town, city and fortress icons are my own. Forest, hills, and mountains are made using Lumbia brush set provided by K. M. Alexander. Still to do: rivers, cliffs, reef, and prettification. I'm thinking of adding some color to forest, texture up the water a bit. Any ideas on how to do the reef?
As to the question of why to places labels first, it ensures there will be adequate room for them. While more important to plan labels early in a detailed hand-drawn map in traditional media, it's still useful on a digital map.

Still need to do rivers. Any opinions on the reefs?

Hi there!
The contrast between white land and purple sea is painful on the eyes. I hope you're adding land colour next.
The reef looks like something fluorescent floating on the water surface. I'd try a colour that makes it look like it's underwater.
The sans serif font for the title looks odd next to other large labels that are using a fancy font. Stick to the same style throughout. You could maybe even look for something between easy to read and fancy and use one font in the entire image. Consistent typography works wonders on any design project.
The details look good, but again hard to look at because of the pure white.
I hope these observations are helpful.

Went with a purplish reef, which I do think is an improvement. Added a scale, making Nitha more an island than a continent. Added a parchment texture, which takes out the harsh whiteness. Not sure if I'll add any more color except the rivers.
Still to do: rivers, scrolls under the title, write up some lore.
