Despite not updating much, I have been doing things! Here is some work on the map's topographic relief. I'm trying something new, with shaded relief and caterpillar outlines. I will add some details to it as I go, as well as a paper texture.

Nice mountain range to the Island. Will be great to see where it goes from here. A pile of clay waiting for the last layer or two to bring it to life. My Island literally looked like a blob of clay without the color. The hash markings are pulling it together.

Thanks! I also think it looks like clay, which is pretty cool. I'm heading in to do some more now.

Anybody got any suggestions for where to get a paper texture?

You could have a look at some of mine if you like. Its the first link in my signature

There are lots of other bits of parchment floating around on the Guild as well - mostly in the Mapping Elements forum

There's a nice collection here by Barek if you carry on scrolling down through that thread, and I'm sure there are many more.

Don't forget that you can personalise whichever bit you decide to use - adjust the hue, saturation and lightness - or add stains and blots if it suits your map better that way.

    EDIT: Handy tip...

When you choose a bit of parchment or paper, its better to choose something that's already big enough to fill your map without having to enlarge it. It doesn't matter if its way too big, as long as you don't scale it. Most parchments are designed to be used 'as is', and don't suffer scaling terribly well. So if its too big just move it around a bit until you get the bit you want, and trim it to the image.

looking good so far! And I agree it looks like clay waiting to be molded. Can't wait to see it finished!
