Default The Beginning of My Map-Making Journey

    Hello all!

I am very new to creating maps but after trying my hand at a couple, I have found that I enjoy it quite a bit but have a lot to learn! So here is my first submission of a random map - no names, not much thought other than to practice different elements and styles. I have yet to try doing any borders and definitely need to practice drawing compasses and get scale sorted.

Let me know what you think and any tips or advice you can give would be very much appreciated!

    - AP.

Looks nice, yet a bit small to get an opinion on the details.

    Hi AP. ,

I am in a very similar position to yourself. You are in the right place, people here are very helpful and supportive of anyone new and have an obscene amount of talent and experience they are willing to share. The only advice I am in a position to offer is that the Mapping Resource sections are well worth trawling through.

    Good Luck with the mapping

A nice beginning. I like your sea monster too.

I would suggest having different types of pencils for certain tasks. It seems you used a pencil with quite a thick drawing size for most things. But, it is definitely worth it having a sharpened smaller line pencil for finer details like buildings or sea monsters. It makes it easier to get the detail you want. For coastlines and mountains the thicker line is fine.

Thanks! I feel the sea monster is a little messy so wasn't sure about that tbh. But yes, you're right I was only using the one pencil! I favour mechanical pencils for most of my drawings but will have to start breaking out the others. I feel silly for not having thought of that haha.

Thank you! Yeah I'm so glad I found this place and can't wait to get using all the useful resources. Feeling a tad overwhelmed with the sheer amount that is available in all honesty, but am loving that there is such a friendly and supportive community to help!

    And to you too!

Just a little look at the next map I've started where I'm trying something a little different after seeing and being inspired by the wonderful work of Misty Bee! I saw her beautiful work via Pinterest and Instagram before coming here and seeing she's a member here too! Can't get over how beautiful her maps are. (Fangirling now over...sorry not sorry) But yes, I'm still using the one pencil...maybe I'll get out my others ones as I continue this!

Oh! Your trees are miles better in this one. And I really like that you did a little Icon. (Edit: I also like your grass. It is good way to fill certain parts of a map.)

(And by the way, Misty Bee is an inspiration to me too. Haha, so don't worry about being a fan. )

    Have a nice day,
    Omri
