    Wip Jan/Feb 17 Lite Challenge: The Dragon's Hoard - A treasure map in two parts.

    Hi Folks,

    Line work for part 2 of the map.

    I'm not sure whether I should hatch the outside to delineate the mountain side, or just use shading when I scan the line work in…

    I also want to do a side on view but I'm not sure how to proceed or where to put it! Any suggestions/critique more than welcome.

    Edit: The entry stairs etc are way out of scale with the map, back to the drawing the board!

    Hi Folks,

    Not a lot of WIP's for this map but here is my finished version.

    Dragon Hoard.jpg

    Dragonkin live in Fang Wood and pay tribute to the dragon...
    The Forest of Tranquility can be deadly; the perfumes of the plant life cause unconsciousness when a CON based resistance/saving throw roll is failed (1/4hours)...
    Trolls take a toll at the bridge; usually food - an unlucky party member or hireling is preferred, or gold and gems - so they can pay their tribute to the dragon...
    The souls of the lost call out to sentient beings wanting them to join them; make WIS based resistance/saving throws.
    The dragon, well I'll let you decide...

    <RedPen>
    'Here by dragons', should that be 'be'?
    'Drgonkin' is missing 'a'
    'viciuos' seems to have gotten its vowels crossed.
    </RedPen>

    Besides that it's a nicely laid out map done in monochrome in a way that makes the different terrains obvious. I'm not certain about the mirrored symmetry of the two bits of parchment but that's a minor detail - adventurers should be concentrating on the adventure, not the frayed edges of a map

    Good stuff

    Hi Straf, thanks for the comments. I noticed the vicious mistake and I'm in the process of generally tidying up a few bits and pieces, so I'll fix those other typo's as well. The mirrored sheets are because the "dragons lair" map is supposed to be drawn on the back of the "treasure map", it's the only way I could think of to include both maps in one image. I think overall it turned out ok. I'm still very much a novice in comparison with most others here, so I've got a bit to learn still.

    Ah, that makes sense I was trying to think of a scenario but for some reason that never came into my head, even though I write notes and stuff all over single pieces of paper I carry about with me. Well in that case, carry on sir, don't mind me at all

    In other news my DVDs of The Castle and The Dish arrived in the post this morning so I'm happy

    Enjoy the movies. I preferred The Castle, "Tell him he's dreamin'" and "What do you call that Luv" have almost become catchphrases, over The Dish but they're both great Aussie films.

    I 've been looking at this for some time and I'd like to make a suggestion, if I may...

    How about making that paper look as old as the frayed edges by adding some kind of speckling - not unlike the speckling used in the soil texture, but all over the pages, and very much lighter. By that I mean so light that its barely there at all. In my mind's eye I'm just trying to get rid of the bluishness - the fresh sheet of paper look that it seems to have at the moment.

    My bad if that's just not the look you were aiming at

    Hi Mouse, thanks for the tip. I understand what you're getting at re making the paper look aged; I agree the background looks like a relatively fresh, albeit mildly singed and stained, bit of parchment with a couple of holes in it, which is not entirely what I was looking to achieve though it's very close, I would like it a bit more "used " looking, but I'm not clear on what you mean by "soil texture" and "bluishness". I didn't particularly aim to create a texture if you're referring to some bits of the dragons lair portion of the map, that was an accidental by-product of using shading to delineate the "playable" areas - I was going to use hatching but then decided not to as I didn't think it would work with this map concept.

    I don't know if my PS-fu is strong enough at the moment to do as you suggest...it may be better (easier) to find a different background to use? One that's closer to the look I was after, i.e. a rescued from the flames old-ish map...

    It seems, I was a little premature, and probably not the first time, in calling the map finished.

    I think the map is fine as it is, and could be sold as finished quite easily, but I like the idea of a more rescued from the flames background texture if you can find one
