Question Looking For: Coral, ship wrecks, and the like for under water adventure mapping

This month's challenge has reminded me that there seems to be a lack of certain types of symbols for fantasy mapping. Under water symbols. Things like coral, ship wrecks, sharks, marlin, octopus, mermen, oceanic underwater symbols.

Does anyone have anything like that?

If you look hard enough, you can find many of these, from what I've observed.

The big difference is that often times it seems like the surface of the waters is not surpassed, and these elements are portrayed as if breaking the light of day only. If we're talking about breaking that mold, then I'm soo soo soooo on board. I've always loved, and feared what lurks below, and a different elaboration of the waters would be so wonderful to see.

Thanks, Bogie As usual, you seem to know exactly where to find everything!

I wish I could use the coral you linked to... but they seem to have it all on one image, and I can't use them the way they are now. I wouldn't know the first thing about converting them, and I wouldn't want to try without their permission.

I don't know if you've ever started working with a graphic program like The GIMP, but you can turn many existing symbols into credible underwater symbols with these steps:

    1) In your graphic program, "grey" the symbol a bit.

    2) Put your water texture onto your map.

    3) Put your underwater symbol onto a CC3+ sheet that's at least one notch lower on the sheets list than the water fill. This should be a sheet that contains only underwater symbols.

    4) Give that sheet a level of transparency that creates the desired underwater effect.

As for the conversion of Dundjinni symbols, the "clean" way to do it is:

    1) Convert the symbol.

    2) Post it on the Dundjinni forum as a mod.

EDIT: I probably should mention this too.

If you haven't learned how to "grey" a symbol with a graphic program, you can skip that step. "Greying" sort of puts the gravy on the meat and potatoes, but using the symbol as is with the transparency method I mentioned above will give you a pretty decent underwater symbol too.

    Hey Mark!

The only program I work with is CC3+... I'm still learning the more advanced functions, so I'm not ready to tackle anything new, yet.

Bogie, these images are fantastic! I will have to see what I can do with them!

Fair enough. But as I mentioned, the greying option with another program really is optional. You already can achieve good results simply by making the underwater objects partially transparent, as in the picture above. In this case, a swamp draug was placed atop a photo of a swamp and then sent underwater by making it partially transparent. You can do the same thing with CC3+.
