Wip June / July '18 Lite Challenge: Roland's Journey

For this challenge, I'm continuing on my own journey, which is to map the world of The Dark Tower series (said journey started at the request of my favorite law professor). The first line in the series is: "The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed." It's one of my favorite opening lines, so I've decided to map it. My challenge entry is Roland's journey from the beginning of The Gunslinger to the point in The Wastelands when Roland (now accompanied by his ka-tet) reaches Lud and boards Blaine the Mono.

This is my first draft and except for the text and compass, everything is on the same layer so I'll be re-doing a bunch of stuff. I didn't expect it to come together so well and now I'm wishing I had thought to use separate layers. But this will give me a chance to decide whether I want to re-do the mountains, trees, and buildings with my own stuff, instead of downloaded brushes.

Thanks, Bogie and MistyBeee! I made some minor changes, fiddled with color and such.

This reminds me of the map on the intro of The Ponderosa. It looks great.

I am probably really showing my age.

Oh my goodness, you're right! It does have a Ponderosa feel to it! I had to google the map; I did watch Bonanza as a kid. It's just a few years before my time but the re-runs were still going strong in the early 1980s (and we only had 4 channels, I was unable to convince my parents about the virtues of paying for cable until my senior year of high school). I'm planning on drawing the various building icons, since I used not-my-brushes for the draft. I think I'll draw 'em Ponderosa style!

I switched up the background stuff a bit, to make it feel more like my other Dark Tower map. I definitely need to make the starting point more obvious, and I want to tone down Blaine's color (pink was Stephen King's choice for the monorail color, not mine). And I'm sure I'll find plenty of other things that need to be fixed/cleaned up.

More fixes. I tried to make the underground passage that Roland and Jake follow through the mountains more...undergroundy. I also added some texture to the sea, lobstrosities to Lobstrosity Beach, and called out the starting point with outer glow.

Thank you, MistyBeee! I have a couple more little details to add. The Dark Tower series, especially the first three novels, is one of my favorites so it was a lot of fun to explore the world from a cartographer's perspective!
