Default Apr / May '17 Lite Challenge: Cartogryphia and the Rhume Islands

Well, now that I'm done with the main challenge, I've got a bit of time to do something for this. I'm thinking more along the lines of Tilt and am going for a whole country of cartographers!

Virtually every map I do for the challenges end up spiralling out of control with extra bits and pieces, so in order to keep this simpler and also for good practice, I'm going to aim around an historical atlas type look...

...or...at least that's the plan until I spiral from there.

    Here's a start I've made.

Always a fan of your linework in general, GLS, but especially your landmasses. They have such a real feel to them. Do you hand draw everything or do you have a method you generally stick to?

You're getting this composition thing off to a T just lately.

Great start, Greg. Looking forward to the rest of the WIP

Cheers, Matthew! It's a style I've been meaning to have a stab at for a while.

Haha, no pressure on me then! I'll do my best!

Thanks, Hustle. Well, I'd love to say I did have some kind of method, but I don't know if I do really. What I generally do though is once I have a rough idea of what I'm going to do with a map, I sketch out a very rough landmass shape, jsut really blocking in the compositional shape. From there, I do a new landmass outline roughening up the edges, putting in some new sticky out bits and inlets. Once I'm vaguely happy with that, I then add a few offshore islands, which I find can really add to the realism.

Sometimes I put in things and think it doesn't look right so shift it about a bit or just delete it. With the islands, it's really about playing about to see what feels right and trying not to overdo it. I don't usually anymore, but sometimes looking at real world maps can help with the offshore island look. Hope that helps!

Haha, thanks Mouse, let's just hope the rest of it continues just as well...

No update just yet, but it is progressing! I've got the fun task of coming up with a good 100+ names for the map and I'm hoping to base them all around the users on the Guild to add to it being the home of cartographers.

    Tilton?
    Hustle Forest?
    Bogie Swamp?
    Baron Sarin Steppe?
    Matthewville?

    Gregory Shipman Cove?

    EDIT:

    Diamond Ridge?
    Jedward Vale?
    ChickPea River?
    ...
