Thread: Thallon WIP by AdventureDepot

  1. #1

    Default Thallon WIP by AdventureDepot

Is this the work in progress section of the forum?
I am heavily influenced by M.Plasses maps on this project

I am testing the water so to speak when it comes to styles and methods for ground, water, hills, mountains, city icons & name placing.

Played around with textures for many hours back and forth for how woods should look like.
I find woods to be quite awkward to draw, since I have never drawn any 3D woods as of yet
Find them ugly by their own but yet they look good on most finished maps once they have their context with many other woods and valleys and more.

-Bit of a dilemma about size of names. Any tips on how readable names should be and at what zoom level it would still be acceptable to use a small size?

-Is there a tradition to use one size online when people can zoom freely and maps meant for RPG books? Many RPGs have quite small name tags still.

-Any tips on fonts? I feel broad fonts work well in rough terrain.

    Beautiful colours here

Have you considered fading the top edge of the shade around the edge of the forests into the trees just a bit - to take off the sharp edge - to make the edge of the forest look a bit more rounded?

    Great mountains

EDIT: And yes - this is the right place

Looking great AD! I pretty much always use the IM FELL fonts. Just search for it on Google and you'll find them. I think they would look very good on this map!

Will take a look into the tree line border. How is this version?

Thank you fort font suggestion, used it here and lightened the colors a bit more on the font since the font was not as broad it got a bit drenched into the woods.

I associate that font strongly with you and now it feels like you touched it. I am a bit confused by the experience.

I love your mountains and hills that seem to have almost no linework ! Looking forward to the next steps

You are right Thomas. Since many other lines are thick black I darkened the hill & mountain lines

How does the latest WIP tag work? Should it update the first opening post with a copy of the WIP?

This is really beautiful, especially the forests. Well, the mountains too, and the sea...
The text is great too. I'm not sure I've ever seen so many different fonts on one map! Somehow you make it work, I like the way it looks.

    hehe.

All names is just poop I make up on the fly.

Will look over the fonts later. Make bigger for zoomed out version and such.

Latest image have only 2 fonts I think, one of which comes in italic for rivers and regular for everything else. Other font for forests only as of yet.

Also a Super thank you to all for the help, comments & compliments

This is coming on really well, AD

I've been offline for a while so I couldn't say anything sooner, but I meant the inside of the forest shadow, not the outside - the bit that is at the top of the trees, not the bit that meets the ground so much.

Can't explain it better than that - and haven't got the facility to upload an example right now.

Please show an example later Mouse : D
There are black lines inside the forests to represent tree tops, similare to many of the styles here https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...b50a715a1c.jpg
