Default May/June '19 Lite Challenge: Kingdoms under the Shattered Sun

I'm slowly trying to get back into the mapping groove, and even though I still have a couple of things I really should get finished (mainly my Guild World map, and the Commission a Guild Member challenge map that I was forced to abandon due to life being a b*tch), I could not resist the temptation of jumping in on this first. It's too good an opportunity to re-visit an older concept I've been itching to give a new go at.

Sleeping Sun is one of my older projects, a story of a ragtag crew and their adventures in a world that is literally dying around them. I've made a half-assed attempt at mapping this concept years ago as a novice cartographer, and boy howdy was that a bad one! I was never that happy with it even then, and now I hate it about ten times more. High time to get a more decent one done.

One of the key elements of the story has always been the magic of the Sun, and more importantly its current decay. The term "Shattered Sun" is shamelessly stolen from this little piece of music that I heard some years ago (the story's title Sleeping Sun is not actually a reference to the sun, but something else).

As the challenge brief said that the source of the destruction must be visible on this map, I got the idea of the dying Sun being a part of the map's border, looming over everything like a harbinger of the end (which, you know, it is) and quite literally giving it a "shattered" look in the illustration just as a nod to the music I mentioned. I hope this is not pushing the idea of the challenge too much, Bogie?

Just a very, very crude sketch right now to kick things off. Here we go!

EDIT: Aaaand I forgot to add the challenge info to the thread's title! So sorry, could some lovely mod correct that for this hopeless bonehead?

Kellerica, even your crude sketches look great! I want to see what happens with this, the premise sounds intriguing!
Like a thief in the night
    she comes with no form
    yet tranquility proceeds
    the accursed storm...

Some further work on this one. Refining landmass, adding textures, that sort of thing. Not much to see yet, but progress is being made.

Edit: Damn, this did NOT look this red on my Cintiq monitor... Digital color work is a bitch sometimes.

Final update for the day... Refined the coastlines a bit further and started playing around with colors for a bit. Probably not what I'm going to stick with, since I want to keep the colors consistent with the theme of destruction, but we'll see what they turn into.

Really liking the border with the sun. My idea for this challenge was strangely similar base on music and stars. Can't wait to see how this comes out.
