Thread: January 2018 Challenge: Haelsin's Journey

Default January 2018 Challenge: Haelsin's Journey

Because I don't already have enough to do this month, I'm going to try and crack out a map in pen and ink. I haven't done one in a while, and I'd like to get myself back into that medium.

I've decided to take the labels completely literally. There are a few labels that mention specific geographic features - so those will be the only labeled geographic features. The rest had 2 sizes, so I'll make the bigger ones country names and the smaller ones city names. But why would the cities be placed as they are, with so many of them clustered in the middle of the map? Aha, this map must depict points of interest along a journey!

Here's a scan of my pencil sketch on recycled Bristol. I plan to ink it in next, add details then, and eventually scan and color in Photoshop.

Hahaha, yep. That sounds familiar XD

Looking good so far! And I like that you're taking those labels literally. I thought of doing the same, and chickened out ... but it is always interesting to constrain yourself and see what you can come up with.
    Good luck!

It's interesting to see that even given the same initial information on the world, we can end up with very different land configuration.

Makes me think of a monster trying to grab something in its claws . Nice, already.

    Thanks.

I've penciled in the design, and inked in the shoreline and rivers. I'll switch to a smaller pen for other details. This has reminded me how much I like this medium!

Blurry picture while I wait for it to dry enough for a scan.

I finished inking in all the pencil sketch items, and erased the construction lines. Here's a scan:

    Plan:
    - Wavy lines around the coast, in black and then blue ink
    - Hatching on the mountains
    - Squiggled details in the forests
    - Further coloring in Photoshop

Nice! It's fun to see you have an almost opposite view of the lands if I compare it to mine. And it looks good .

Here's my latest scan - lots of details added with the pen! I think it might be ready for coloring on the computer.

I kind of just whipped off the title and compass, and I'm not too happy with the compass in particular - so I may leave it border-less rather than shoot myself in the foot.
