Ok...starting a little late on this one but hopefully I can get it finished in time. I decided to play around with Tear's Saderan tutorial a bit and try a few different things applying it to a "globe". The terrain was all generated in Fractal Terrains and then exported to Photoshop.

So, the light parts consist of the land, and the dark parts consist of the oceans? Or is it the other way around? If it's the former, which I'm assuming, my only statement is that the land masses seem somewhat thin compared to the ocean. Perhaps thickening them up a bit might be nice--unless that's the effect you're going for. In which case, keep going for it!

Here's an updated image...I'm pretty happy with how this is progressing.
Now I need to figure out how to make the text labels look like they conform to the shape of the globe. It'll take some experimentation.
