Yeah, that was a huge disaster. Curious to see what you do with this.
Hopefully I'll get this going and done for this challenge. I'm thinking of doing a sequence of maps that show the Halifax Explosion that occurred in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1917.
A french cargo ship loaded with wartime explosives collides with a steamship in the NARROWS in the harbor. The explosion is the largest blast prior to Nuclear Warheads and equals 2.9 kilotons of TNT, it wipes out large part of the city, and it's pressure wave snaps trees, bends road roads and demolishes building, while the cargo that has exploded rains down soot and covers everything, but there's more -- it also causes a tsunami that then wipes out part of the city across the harbor.
Map One the collision with towns standing, fire ball and initial smoke
Map Two - Halifax wiped out with building down, debris flying outward, smoke and soot, tsunami waves begins.
Map Three - tsunami crushing and flooding other city across harbor.
Hopefelly can figure it out and make it look ominous and interesting.Halifax_Explosion_Aftermath_LOC_2_-_restored.jpg1280px-Halifax_Explosion_-_harbour_view_-_restored.jpgImo_1.jpg

Can't believe I've never heard about this. I would love to see your maps showing the devastation!
LOL, I've never heard of it either. What an awesome idea though! Looking forward to seeing how you put it together.

Yeah, this was one of the first disasters that I thought about mapping, as I did a school project on this a while back. It's a very good choice!
I believe there were around 2,000 deaths and 9,000 injuries. It should be interesting to see if this turns out to be a statistical map.
Good luck!
I'm blaming the UK education system for my ignorance, since Wolram's never heard of it either. The explosion sounds utterly horrific .... but a great choice for the challenge!

### LATEST WIP ###. Ok so here's my layout. More of a newspaper info graphic style. Kinda like Corilliant alluded to, I'll add more labeling after the Maps are done.
Now I have to do the maps & icons, decided to do just ONE map, that includes the 3 stages of the disaster - the explosion, the blast, the tsunami. Probably a plan view of the city, but maybe some perspective?. Probably do it in Photoshop, this 1st part was done in Adobe Illustrator as I worked out the idea. I could continue doing it in Illustrator, a little more graphic looking, but I like playing/learning Photoshop.
I am not sure how the Tsunami would act? would it be pulled away on the Halifax side when it hits the Richmond side? the Narrows opens to the Atlantic, so not sure how it would react???
As soon as I post I see a typo. Staring time 8:15

I like the amount of information you've got on there! I'm learning already
Agree with Chick, UK education system has let us down on this one.
I think the strength in your layout is in it's simplicity and readability, if you add detail, I would say be careful not to over-do it!
### LATEST WIP ###. Added some buildings and the White blinding initial blast, the flooded area and exploding buildings, lots of work on the buildings & roofs still. Need to figure out the front edge of the Tsunami. Going darker. Done for the weekend.HalifaxExplosion-01.jpg
