That's a cool map idea.
While technically not a cartoon I grew up on, the Pirates of Dark Water was an ambitious, story driven cartoon originally produced by Hanna Barbera in the very early 1990s. It had over arching story lines, character growth, subplots, and some really great voice acting by some big names. It was sadly cancelled before the whole tale could be told, in no small part because it was very often broadcast out of sequence and therefore was difficult to follow. (I can recommend the DVD set, as I own it and have watched it recently. Both Amazon and Walmart sell it.)
This show made enough of an impact on my Partner that he's running at tabletop RPG homebrewed out of 5e Dungeons & Dragons for myself, some friends and some of our kids, who were too young to have seen it in the original broadcasts. Our game is set around 1000 years into the future, after Prince Ren and his crewmates lived and ended the scourge of Dark Water from the world of Mer. The first map in my portfolio is for that game, and I'm hoping that he figures out how to use this one....
I'm using Inkarnate software, because I have no other way to get a decent image onto the internet right now....
Four Ports is a conglomerate city, that as one can imagine, used to be four different towns that grew together over time. In the center of the city is an ancient impact crater, in which magical blue crystals grow. These crystals hold cosmic and arcane energies that thousands of years later are still being studied. One must be careful when harvesting the crystals, for when you cut one off the original seed crystal, two more will grow from the cut.

I don't know that I'm going to keep any of the lay out, I think I made the scale too small for it to be cartoony, so I am liable to wipe all the stamps and start again....

Hokay soooo....I got a little carried away with the smol scale, so I've reworked the centre of the landmass, improved the size of the stamps, and added a little more definition to the crater.....One more port to go, but the storms from Marco have started, so just in case we loose power for a while, here's my latest...

Sweet! The towns are so intricate. I'm wondering if there is perhaps some legend as to the shape of the continent. Perhaps a god stirred the waters when in a cataclysmic celestial battle and the continent formed accordingly. I'm also wondering what the crystal thing is.
In the Pirates of Dark Water, there is a lot of really quirky and unique geology going on, in the world itself, there are 20 seas, each with their own unique properties, so pretty much all land masses are archipelagos, and from the look of the show, not many are volcanic in nature. The World of Mer does have at least one god mentioned by name, but if my partner has any ideas about the start of the landmass, he hasn't told me yet.
The crystal thing is exactly that, a massive crystal that grew out of a meteor impact, it holds both extra-worldly and arcane energies....what exactly those energies do, I don't know yet....
That's awesome. Maybe an evil demigod could be launching an assault on the island to try to capture the crystal, which he will then use for his own sinister purposes...
Stepping away so I don't ruin the cool thing I've got going on with the seas.....
