I wonder if you could sort something out that's been bugging me for a while now?
I don't really understand when a battle map is supposed to be 100 or 300 dpi, or what the ideal sizes are all about. Everyone tells me different things, but since you are in the business of selling them, I wondered if you would be kind enough to straighten it out just a bit for me please?

I do printable maps at 300 DPI ..The higher the DPI the better it will print... I design my maps on a 24x36 Layout. That way if anyone wanted to print it out they can easily find a place to do it..Like Walgreen or Walmart. However if you wanted to get it on say a 36x48 print you could without much distortion. Originally I was gonna make them compatible with Paizo Flip Maps which are 24x30 but hard to find a single print source..You still had to get on printed on a 24 x 36 ...and have a blank strip or Strips on a Sheet.
Different Virtual Table Tops have different optimum DPI settings..Roll20 is 50 DPI and Max Map size 1250 x 1250 pixels so 1250 divided by 50 = 25 x 25 Map. I don't use one but I find a Map that is 72 DPI can be used in Most and look great in Window Viewer which is what I use to display my maps and it will work in Roll20 also. Reason why I do grid and No grid versions is because some people like me don't use a VTT and need the Grids. While others use a VTT and most have built in grids..and if the Optium DPI is not right the lines won't line up right. before I had to upgrade my System My systems could not handle saving Maps over 72 DPI so my Older maps were mainly made at 72 DPI
I am sure you know the more DPI an image has the Better it looks when zoomed in on... The fewer the DPI the grainier a picture will become when zoomed in.
Also another factor that people consider when savng a Map...How will it be shared and stored..Most Forums has file size limits...Too Many DPI and you can't post the image. Otherwise you need to compress the files.

jpstod has it right. I thought Roll 20 defaulted to 70 pixels to the square, though.
I don't sell maps, but I do try to produce versions for both print and virtual tabletop. Generally I wind up designing at 100 pixesl to the five-foot square, which corresponds nicely with 100 dot-per-inch printing. One pixel = one dot. It also keeps the file sizes a little more reasonable than 300 DPI. Especially if you're working on a very large map, doing it at 300 DPI makes that file get big FAST.
VTT is way easier. Most VTT software lets you adjust the grid to match the map's design, or to what you need. There've been times when I had a map designed at 100px to the square, and decided to effectively double the size of the map by setting the VTT's grid to 50px to the square. It's handy.
Great map John Paul! Very playable / useful map. Looks wonderful.
My one minor nit pick is that the tables look a tiny bit small for the scale. See how they look to you if you increased them about 25% larger. About 7.5' x 4' instead of 6' x 3'.
There is a VTT that uses 50 dpi, it might be Fantasy Grounds, but I'm not sure. However, Roll20 is 70 dpi. Some of the mapmakers for Roll20 provide their maps at 140 dpi so that when they are sized down for the 70 dpi, you can zoom in extra close and get great detail that can be lost at 70 dpi.
