Default Pleased to find this website, from a Londoner in Asia.

It's certainly good to find this Forum, I used to play map making as a child living in the U.K and now four decades later I am currently working on my Cartography and learning more everyday.

I do appreciate Mr David Greenhood's book " Mapping for Everybody " written in 1946, a great read for my amateur hobby.

I am in a location where computers are not available, not working properly and software is very hard to come by, so shall be practising my Paper Cartography using pencil, fountain pen with numerous colour inks and compass.

I will however be using/tracing a version of google maps to use as a base map and filling in the pathways, small roads, footpaths and numerous other things and locations that they have left out or not added.

I plan to make a very detailed map with shops and important helpful locations, such as chemist/pharmacist, doctors, food supplies and other important information for travellers in Asia/India.

So I look forward to contributing and chatting to the other members belonging to this group.

    Cheers.

    Cheers John,

I made myself a plywood map carrier/portfolio today and getting together my base map for additional information.

I found that I had to pencil in the roads using a pencil after printing out from google maps as the printouts are very very faint, can barely see the roads marked on the map at all.

Glasses and a head torch may work, I will see tomorrow as it's night time here now.

I think I will print it out at the Internet cafe and use a clip board and pencil in the road lines a lot more carefully, I will use my inner artist, whilst online and have the clear to read map on screen to compare to.

Such a shame that google don't allow there maps to be clearly printed, still that's what keeps is Cartographers busy I suppose. :-)

Now all I have to do is fine a good quality pencil where the lead in the nib doesn't break every time I sharpen it, that shall be a challenge in India. Lol

I shall keep you posted on my progress. I'm only using an iPhone but should be able to send a photo of the finished project.

    Thanks for the welcome.
