Thread: Recommended Books on Map Design and Structure?

Default Recommended Books on Map Design and Structure?

I have tried a few books including 'How Maps Work' but I found it was more of a cognitive analysis with some mention of semiotics, but less overall focus of the actual elements and assembly that goes into a well thought out map.

My ideal book would be slightly intellectual (covering highlights of historical evolution) but really a dive into the various stylistic elements and symbols that compose the 'UI/UX' of a map.

    Would anyone have any recommendations?

I do not know of any books, but I find the USGS for regional mapping ideas and symbols quite good and versatile. Google Maps over California and metro regions of Japan are very good for studying building footprints and building placement on property. NASA's radar elevation maps should give you some ideas, but I personally have not gotten into world building other than my Kidasuna map made with RPG Maker XP or 03, not sure what version, but old.

My personal map design comes from remote viewing and other psychic viewing phenomenon that are not really appropriate for this forum.

I am afraid I can't really help you either, aside from a bump for visibility, I suppose.

I am currently working on "How to Lie With Maps," which is a very entertaining book about how maps are used to convey information, and how they are manipulated to fool those who read them. Its academic, but I think it lacks the practical advice you're looking for. I will let you know if I find anything that suits your needs, as I've been researching map making books, myself.
