    Default Hello from Sweden

My name is Pelle. I made a (the?) hexmap extension for Inkscape. I make a boardgame map now and then, but not publishing-quality, and I really should practice more and get better at that. I like Inkscape a lot, as you might guess. Except that it keeps crashing on me periodically (but part of that might be because I torture it with my home-made extensions).

GIMP is also nice, and I have used it since long before 1.0 (even the Motif-version before they created Gtk, which means says a Google search that this was about 20 years ago, which also means I am old now) but I am hopeless at bitmap editing. I need to learn much more about how to work with textures and combine Inkscape and GIMP to make effects that are difficult (for me, at least) to do with just vector objects.

I like older styles of maps, around 19th century (plus minus a few decades). Maps that looks like maps. So kind of light on the texturing side of things except for decorations. That is really the styles I would be happy to be better at reproducing and hopefully share a few maps here (and maybe get ideas). I will probably have some questions around those types of maps later, not being sure about what the most effective ways are to create some of the patterns.

Hi Pelle, welcome to the Guild. I'm also a huge fan of Inkscape, though I don't have the knowledge to write extensions, so kudos to you for that! I get quite a number of crashes too but I run the developer version and I tend to push it really hard with a ridiculous number of objects/nodes so I suppose it's only to be expected. It teaches you to save often!

If you're working on a map, feel free to start a thread in one of the work-in-progress folders and share it with us. Or, if you're just looking for a place to start, have a browse through the Tutorials area.

If you're stuck with anything or need advice, just ask.
