I don't know if it's fun or worrying that when I opened the map without reading your comments first, my first immediate thought was "Ah! That's a watercolor texture by Nopkin!" I clearly spend a little too much time looking at textures.

Looking good so far, even though I do agree that the coastlines could use some further defining. I already know I'm going to love the colors of this when it's done.

I tracked down the texture you mentioned, this are superb. I love watercolor so good choice. I'm interested to know how you got the border to look perfectly watercolorly. I haven't been able to create a proper watercolor digitally and have to go traditional if I want it. Maybe I'm missing a tool or add on?

Not much progess to show on this atm, what with the kids being off school all week for half-term. Once they go back to school on Tuesday I should start getting more time to devote to this.

For now though, I've added a first pass of rivers and roughed in some mountain positions.

It looks "watercoloury" because it's done with watercolours. And scanned in. So the edges around the original image are created with masking tape and Nopkin's painting.

If you mean the edges on the inside of the border (but I don't think you did) then I created that by making a band and then made it quite rough and wobbly. I gave it a small gblur and then used it do desaturate the layer below. I then painted a layer over the top with a blend mode in an attempt to get a similar colour to the outer edge (still needs adjusting). And then, the real time-consuming bit was going round both inside edges and drawing small tears and protrusions. I went a bit over the top in places but meh, I think it looks quite effective.

It's looking great with actual rivers that work

And yes, I did mean the edges on the inside of the border because exactly what you said you did was what I figured it would take to do. I was hoping for some great wisdom way in how to do it. I agree with you the effect you achieved came out excellently.

Yup, I'm sold on the colors/texture at this point. Gonna have to keep an eye on this one.

I really enjoy the subtle lining around the coastlines!

    Update.

Cleaned up the coastlines. Started work on the mountains. I'll be adding more hills and stuff in later, just needed this lot to sort out rivers etc.
Just testing something with the darker seas. I've not finalised any colouring yet.
