*** September/October Lite Challenge - A Fresh Perspective ***
This month we're taking a new view of old locations. The challenge is to create a side on map. This can be a straightforward elevation or an isometric view. The trick here is all in the perspective - the subject matter is entirely open!
If you are interested in doing an isometric map, then a useful trick when placing a grid is to create a square grid, rotate it by 45 degrees and then shrink it vertically by 57.7%.
For each entry start a new thread in this forum with the title:
August/September challenge entry - <your title here>
Before any thumbnail write:
### Latest WIP ###
This will allow the thumbnail scraper to pick up the thumbs to create an array of the posts for people to check out.
Remember to visit the other contestants threads and comment/advice and so forth so everybody learns.
The winner of the challenge will win fame, glory, a silver compass and $40 store credit from Profantasy.
The challenge will close on the 15th of October. Make sure you get your entry done in time!

So this can be a side on map or a sort of 3/4 perspective style? I guess some examples would have made that clear. At first I was thinking along the lines of some of DJ's work but then some of the other details sort of confused me.

Man, that Kowloon thing is crazy.
On the challenge? Has anyone ever read Abbot's Flatland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatland)? It and Planiverse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Planiverse) might make some good fodder for this one.

Isometric, 3/4 perspective and straight up elevation are all legitimate. Just don't do a top down map.
Flatland would be a pretty col starting point for this one - though how you want to map a 2D world from the side....
Ah. Planiverse was from the side, not top-down. I think a map of a Planiverse city would be awesome! Someday I'll tackle it.
